Dear Parent/Carer
‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire’
LUKE 3: 10-18
This is our last newsletter for the 2021 Academic year and I congratulate you all for managing to get through what has been a very challenging 12 months. At times across this year we have all experienced varying degrees of anxiety and vulnerability but we have navigated through this, with family, friends and the College community offering comfort and support when needed.
I thank you all for the support you have provided me in my first year as Principal at St Paul’s and hope to continue this journey into 2022 in the knowledge that we are an amazing College community with capable students and staff who are motivated and invested in the learning of all within our community.
Our HSC examination period concluded last week and we got through without any disruptions. Our Year 12 students were outstanding in all examinations and are a credit to the College. We will be celebrating their graduation on Friday 10th December at the South West Rocks Country Club and expect this to be a wonderful experience.
We had our Year 7, 2022 Orientation Day last week and it was a tremendous experience. Over 120 students attended and they were involved in a variety of activities that assisted them in getting to know each other and the layout of the school including the position of classrooms. Unfortunately, our Crescent Head Public School students were unable to join us and I look forward to meeting them all at the beginning of next term.
Our new Curriculum and Pastoral teams met across this week and continued our planning for 2022. There is a great deal of work going toward ensuring that 2022 is a very engaging experience for ALL students. To assist with this we had a College Student Leadership conference on Tuesday afternoon that was attended by our College leaders. This experience involved our leaders unpacking their roles and developing some goals for 2022. It is hoped that these goals will align to the College ‘School Improvement Plan’ and really demonstrate the importance of ‘student voice’!
In the last week of term, we have our Year 7-11 Prizegiving & Awards ceremony (Tuesday 14th December) and our Community Day (Wednesday 15th December). Both events are compulsory and students are expected to attend.
Reports will be released ONLY to students who attend the last day of school (Wednesday 15th December) or who have communicated to the College reason for absence. After the year we have had, student attendance is even more important and it is hoped that we can enjoy our last day of term as a community - which matters enormously!
I hope this Christmas break is a peaceful and restful experience shared with family and friends. I look forward to seeing our students (and staff) return for the 2022 academic year, refreshed and ready for what will be an exciting year for the College.
Kind regards
Mr David JOHNS B.Ed., Cert. Gifted Ed., Grad. Cert. Adol. Health and Welfare, M.Ed. (Ed Lead), M.Ed. (Theol)

The year in review!
2021 will always be a standout year for me personally as I started a new job with only my second only employer in my 34th year of teaching! This experience has been very personally gratifying, as I had come from a space where I was very comfortable with processes and the school community to St Paul’s where I was starting afresh. In the final few weeks of 2021, I write to you with great confidence and positivity of my year at St Paul’s and the many exciting opportunities which lays ahead in 2022.
There have been some fundamental aspects of learning that we have continually focused on during 2021: successful teaching and learning stems from a positive relationship between the teacher and the students in their class - the students must arrive on time for work with required equipment and then engage within the classroom environment adding their respectful opinions and asking for help when required, the teacher must be ready with a super lesson aimed at enquiry and academic growth with each student in the class a valued and supported member of our community; every minute counts especially in the senior years; assessment must be valid and accessible to all, let's continue to review our pedagogy and consider 21st century educational options in the years ahead.
There have been some exciting developments in curriculum in 2021 at St Paul’s: the change to non-streamed classes throughout the school, the development of the Learning Pulse in Year 11 to develop Case Management meetings with students, staff and parents, the continuing association with Lyn Sharratt with 13 of our staff and it’s significant impact on Learning & Teaching at the school, the development of a Variation to Routine committee to ensure all offerings outside the classroom are meaningful. There are exciting developments ahead for 2022 including a moderation review of all HSC assessment tasks, an Action Research review of Maths and English in Year 8, a cross-faculty literacy based assessment process for Year 8 in Term 3, an increased emphasis on valid assessment processes using the framework of the Lyn Sharratt Assessment Waterfall Chart, and a comprehensive review of each student’s profile as a learner allowing for precise class placement and the review of improvement.
I would like to offer my great thanks to so many within our St Paul’s community, especially Mr Johns and Mrs Shipton who have been incredible supporters, the wonderful teaching and non-teaching staff at St Paul’s and the students and their families who have been so generous in their assistance and kindness throughout 2021. I hope you have a peaceful and prosperous Christmas with friends and family and bring on 2022!
Mr Geoffrey Melville - Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching
The conclusion of the 2021 academic year is again upon us, with next week being the last week before students break for the Christmas celebrations. Christmas is such a special time of the year where we hopefully can spend time together with family and friends, but also reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. It is a time of spiritual reflection on the important foundations of the Christian faith. It’s also a celebration. It’s when Christians celebrate God’s love for the world through the birth of the Christ child, Jesus.
I believe we have had a very successful year despite the adversities of the current times. With these challenges I hope that every student has had the ability to reach their personal best over many aspects of life; academic growth and personal best underpinned by Christ-centred learning.
Thank you to all parents who support us in our endeavours to allow all students to ‘let their light shine’. This support continues to be crucial for the academic success of your children. I hope all families have a happy and Holy Christmas.
Mrs Bronwyn Shipton - Assistant Principal - Mission and Wellbeing
SHINE
On Friday 26th November our YMO’s, Mikayala Greenhalgh and Ebaney Cook, together with our Senior Ministry Team of Jorja Donnelly, Sienna Moore, Chloe Riley, Maxwell Winn, Carmen Wittich ran Shine for our Year 9 and 10 CSYMA classes. The day was modified due to COVID but it continued to honour the popular features of the annual gathering and was a joyful celebration of youth, faith and music. The theme of the day was 'Called to Connection' and provided students an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus and allowed students to connect with each other. The students are to be commended on their engagement, openness and respectfulness that they displayed throughout the day. A special thanks to Rilee O’Loughlin for her contribution and assistance and to Mr Fahey for his support and involvement during the day. Student feedback from the day was very positive and indicated that many felt more comfortable and enriched in their faith journey.
GIVING MASS
The Giving Mass will take place at 12.00pm this Friday 10th December at All Saints Catholic Church Kempsey. Our Student Leaders, House Captains and Student Advocacy Leaders for 2022 plus selected Pastoral Care Group Representatives from Year 11 will attend the mass. The mass will be streamed to the rest of the College via the Parish Facebook page. Each year St Paul’s holds a Giving Mass to present non-perishable gifts to people in the Macleay Valley to those who are less fortunate. In collaboration with St Vincent de Paul, we are able to support our community in this holiday season.

To assist families and students to prepare for 2022 please check out the Book/Equipment Lists on the College website:
RETURNS - THANK YOU to parents for your support in prompting students to return their library borrowings. We have had a great response.
In regards to those students who still have outstanding books, I have emailed out a current list of their borrowings, to both their school email and a parent contact email. Could you please check this list and endeavour to have your child finalise any outstanding items? Any missing books need to be paid for in order to have them removed from their account. However, if there are any issues please try to contact the library staff to discuss the matter as soon as possible, as books need to be returned before reports are issued.
Exemptions
- Year 12 2022 students are permitted to keep possession of their Year 12 textbooks over the Christmas break.
- Any books borrowed for reading over the holidays are also exempt and VERY welcomed! Please have your child email the library or visit us to renew any titles they have already borrowed and may wish to continue reading over the holidays.
HAPPY HOLIDAY READING REWARDS - In an effort to encourage reading during the upcoming break the library is giving away a box of Cadbury Favourites. To be eligible students need only borrow a book for the holidays. If you could help support this literacy initiative by encouraging your child to borrow a book, before Tuesday, that would be much appreciated. E-books are also eligible for the draw. An emailed screenshot of the borrowed SORA item is all we need.
USEFUL LIBRARY LINKS - To view what titles the library has available for borrowing, please visit our Chisholm Library website, where our entire library catalogue, including ebooks, is available. Our library catalogue is also viewable via the library app, Library Link. Installation instructions are on our website.
There are also some fantastic reads, plus a huge selection of titles, in SORA, our e-book collection, which now boasts an extensive range of digital magazines as well. If you are interested in borrowing from SORA you can use your child’s username and password for access.
PARENT BORROWING ALSO WELCOME - If you are interested in borrowing personally, while you are having your much deserved break, please email me (patrice.martin@lism.catholic.edu.au) before Tuesday and I can have the book/s available in the Front Office for collection.
We have some great inspirational biographies available as well as more adventurous stories, such as those told by Bear Grylls and real life 'Bear Tales', as recommended by David Johns himself, but not personally experienced as far as I am aware! There is always a great selection of light romance, fantasy, and some very moving and memorable fiction reads. Something for everyone.
And finally, we wish you all a very, very happy Christmas.
For those who have been longing to see family and friends, may you be blessed with their company during this time.
And we both hope, where ever you travel, that you have a safe and relaxing holiday with a great book in tow!
Kind regards
Mrs Patrice Martin & Mrs Cathy Whalen - Library Technicians

The Space Industry - How to Land a STEM career
A STEM career in the space industry could take you places you have never dreamed.
If you can see yourself writing code for satellites, helping to safely launch rockets or interrogating images of the Earth
– Australia and New Zealand are the places to be.
The space industry already supports 10,000 Australian and 12,000 New Zealand jobs, with both countries committed to massively growing these numbers. How? Australian and New Zealand governments recently created dedicated space agencies. But unlike NASA, they aren’t trying to send satellites and spaceships into space themselves, they’re supporting others to get there.

How to handle fear about the future: A guide for year 12 students
Life as a year 12 student was probably already stressful enough, and then along came the coronavirus (COVID-19) to add even more uncertainty. You may be finding the resulting situation really hard to deal with.
You might be experiencing fear of the future in the short term (next week, next term) as well as in the distant future (end of the year, 2021, and beyond). As a result, you’re likely experiencing a range of different emotions, including stress, fear, uncertainty, depression, frustration, anger and disappointment.
While these emotions are understandable, they are also very distracting and can have negative impacts on our health and mood. Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC)
The Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (10767NAT), otherwise known as the Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC), is a qualification equivalent to Year 12. It is an excellent alternative if you missed out on the HSC or you want to do the HSC again to achieve a higher score for entrance into university.
TPC graduates gain an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) equivalent called a Tertiary Entrance Score and can use this to apply for entry to universities across Australia. Western Sydney University and Charles Sturt University both offer guaranteed entry to a range of undergraduate degrees for students with an eligible score who have completed the TPC with TAFE NSW.

Registrations will open in January 2022. Sign up to our Bridging Courses 2021-2022 mailing list to receive new course updates.
If you do not have the assumed knowledge for your course, we strongly recommend that you undertake bridging studies.
